Companies including Velux, Greendale Construction, The SAMME Project, Porotherm and Akzo-Nobel Paints (Dulux) were on hand to provide demonstrations and taster workshops to give students an insight into different trades. Over the course of the week activities included:
Velux demonstrating their window systems with apprentices getting some hands-on experience fitting their windows into a specially designed ‘roof rig’.
Maria Seabright & Chris Cave from Greendale Construction giving a talk about what they look for when recruiting staff
Sam Everard from The SAMEE Project in Bournemouth talking to students about how to become self-employed
Porotherm a local brick company demonstrated their unique bricklaying system which requires an adhesive solution to be used which speeds up the process compared to conventional block laying
Akzo-Nobel Paints (Dulux) visited painting and decorating students to run a competition and to also talk about their Trade product range.
Not to be outdone, the Electrical and Plumbing Department also got involved with National Apprenticeship Week running competitions for students.
Electrical students had to create an electrical board which included trunking work, bending conduit, linking switch boxes and wiring accordingly. On hand to judge was Paul Barker of Martin Barker Electrical who has apprentices at the college and Dean Lobo of electrical supplier Eyre & Ellison who also sponsored the event with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.
In Plumbing Mother’s Day was the theme for their competition with students creating candle stick holders. Sponsoring the competition was Plumbstop.
