Course Overview

This is an exciting full-time course for students aged 16-18 designed to give you the opportunity to gain a qualification and progress onto our Level 2 trade courses, or to prepare you to start an Apprenticeship or enter full-time work in the Construction Industry.

The course is based across our facilities at the North Road campus in Poole and The Fulcrum Centre (near the Tower Park leisure complex).

This study programme also includes Personal Development, Employability and Work Experience, and depending on GCSE grades on entry, may include GCSE or Functional Skills in Maths and/or English.

The course gives learners the opportunity to develop skills at their own pace and you will be assessed through a series of practical assessments and online tests throughout the year.

This is a one-year full-time programme which you will need to attend approximately three to four days of the week for 36 weeks.

You will cover the following subjects:

  • Brickwork
  • Blockwork
  • Plastering
  • Carpentry and Joinery
  • Safe Handling of Materials
  • Health and Safety
  • The Construction Industry
  • Working Platforms

Depending on GCSE grades on entry - the study programme will include GCSE or Functional Skills in Maths and English.

.You will need to achieve GCSE Maths and English at a minimum of Grade Levels 2 or 3.

The course is assessed through a series of practical test assignments, assessment booklet questions and an online multi-choice exam.

You will be expected to complete 30 hours of work-related experience including site visits, guest speakers and actual site work experience if available.

You can progress to a Level 1 or 2 full-time course in a core trade area such as Bricklaying, Carpentry or Plastering.

You could apply for a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Bricklaying or Carpentry if you find a suitable employer to support you.

You could enter the Construction Industry as a full-time worker in a General Builder, Improver or Labourer role.

If you pass your GCSEs in Maths and English to Grade 4 you could apply for a Level 2 Full-Time Plumbing or Electrical Installations course or potentially a T-Level in Construction/Built Environment.

You could enter the Construction Industry as a full-time worker in a General Builder, Improver or Labourer role.

These roles could lead to jobs such as Carpenter, Bricklayer, Plasterer, Ground Worker or General Builder.

This course offers the chance to try out different construction trade skills and become familiar with the demands of the construction industry.  It is the ideal first step into construction and building and will give learners the experience and knowledge to chose their next route of progression.
