Former Theatre Production Arts students tour the world!

Michael du Lieu and Alex Welsh both studied for the BTEC in Theatre Production Arts, which covers all aspects of technical theatre and design. Students can specialise in theatre lighting, sound, stage management, set design, making props, and more. It’s an incredibly practical course, as they work on productions staged in the College’s professional 136-seat Jellicoe Theatre.

After completing his BTEC, Michael went on to study for a BA (Hons) in Stage Management at Rose Bruford College. Wanting to utilise his experience and after an adventure, he joined Royal Caribbean Cruises as technical stage staff.

Alex opted not to go to university following his BTEC. Instead, he worked locally to build up his experience and reputation. He is now also on tour with Royal Caribbean Cruises as a rig assistant, having completed additional rigging training in Las Vegas.

Cruise ships offer a range of opportunities for those in the performing arts industry, just like Michael and Alex. Not only are they learning new skills, they are seeing the world and making brilliant friends along the way. This week Michael is in Barbados and Alex is in Sydney. Michael says, “It’s a great gig!”

The College has a few places left on the BTEC in Theatre Production Arts which starts in September.
