Course Overview

This course is for students who are interested in the police, fire service, armed forces, prison service, security, emergency response, coastguard, RNLI or wider protective services.

You will develop the knowledge, fitness, discipline, teamwork and leadership skills needed to prepare for future study, training, apprenticeships, employment or service related progression.

This is an active, structured and purposeful course. You will learn in the classroom and through practical activities, developing your understanding of protective services, physical preparation, leadership, communication, emergency response, outdoor activity, personal conduct and professional expectations.

You will study a range of topics linked to uniformed and protective services. You will study a range of practical and classroom based units. Typical units are shown below, but these may change before the course starts to make sure the programme remains current and meets awarding body requirements. Final units will be confirmed during enrolment and induction.

  • Carry out map reading and navigation across open country
  • Mental and physical wellbeing
  • Understand conflict management and personal protection
  • Understanding discipline in the uniformed services
  • Outdoor and adventurous expeditions
  • Emergency planning and response in the uniformed services
  • Skills for water based outdoor and adventurous activities

You will learn through classroom study, practical fitness activity, leadership tasks, outdoor activity, navigation, scenario based learning, presentations, written assignments and group work.

This course is for students who:

  • are interested in uniformed or protective services
  • want an active, practical and structured course
  • are motivated by teamwork, leadership, fitness and service
  • may be considering police, fire, armed forces, prison, security, coastguard, RNLI or emergency response related routes
  • want to develop confidence, resilience and professional behaviours
  • are willing to take part in physical activity, practical tasks and outdoor learning
  • can manage classroom study, assignments and independent work

It is a good fit if you want a course with clear expectations around attendance, punctuality, conduct, teamwork and personal responsibility.

You will usually need 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths.

You should also have a genuine interest in protective services, leadership, fitness or emergency response, and be willing to take part in physical activity, teamwork and practical learning.

You will be assessed through coursework and practical assessment. There are no exams on this course.

  • portfolio evidence
  • practical activity

Your teachers will explain each assessment clearly and support you to understand what evidence you need to produce.

You will complete 5 days of work experience as part of your course.

Work experience helps you build confidence, understand the protective services and wider public services sector, develop professional behaviours and make stronger choices about your next step.

Suitable experiences may include volunteering, community service, events, sport and fitness, security, public services, emergency response related insight activity or other appropriate work related settings.

Direct placements with services such as police, fire, armed forces, RNLI or coastguard will depend on availability and cannot be guaranteed.

After this course, you could progress to:

  • further study in public services or uniformed services
  • policing related study
  • criminology and criminal justice related courses
  • security and protective services related study
  • higher education, depending on grades and entry requirements
  • apprenticeships, where entry requirements are met
  • employment or further training linked to protective services, security, community safety, emergency response, outdoor activity or public service settings

With further study, training, recruitment processes or professional entry routes, this course could support progression towards:

  • police related roles
  • fire and rescue related roles
  • armed forces routes
  • prison and custody services
  • security and protective services
  • emergency response and civil contingency related roles
  • coastguard, RNLI or water based response related routes
  • criminology, policing or public services higher education
  • community safety or public service related employment

This course does not guarantee entry into any uniformed or protective service. Many roles have specific entry tests, fitness requirements, age requirements, vetting, recruitment stages, medical checks or further qualifications.

Kit and any trip or enrichment costs to confirm.

You will need appropriate kit for practical activity, fitness and outdoor sessions.

You will also need access to a laptop or suitable device outside college so you can complete independent study, research and assignment work at home.
