Course Overview

This course is for students who enjoy practical sport and want to develop their skills as a coach, leader and communicator.

You will learn how to plan, deliver and review sport and activity sessions, improve your practical skills, understand how people learn in sport, and prepare for progression into coaching, PE, school sport, sport development, leisure, community sport or higher education.

This is a practical, active and people focused course. It is ideal if you want a vocational route after school that helps you build confidence, leadership and professional behaviours.

You will study practical and classroom based topics linked to coaching, sport, leadership and activity delivery.

You will study a range of practical and classroom based units. Typical units are shown below, but these may change before the course starts to make sure the programme remains current and meets awarding body requirements. Final units will be confirmed during enrolment and induction.

Typical Year 1 units include:

  • Exercise, health and lifestyle
  • Preparing for a career in sport and physical activity
  • Sports coaching
  • Practical team sports
  • Practical individual sports
  • Leadership in sport
  • Work experience

Typical Year 2 units include:

  • The athlete’s lifestyle
  • Technical and tactical skills in sport
  • Fitness testing for sport and exercise
  • Instructing physical activity and exercise
  • Fitness training and programming
  • Organising sports events

You will learn through coaching tasks, practical sport, group work, assignments, presentations, session planning, delivery and review.

This course is for students who:

  • enjoy sport and practical activity
  • are interested in coaching, PE, school sport or community sport
  • like working with people and helping others improve
  • want to build leadership, teamwork and communication skills
  • are willing to take part in practical sessions
  • want a clear progression route into sport, coaching, leisure or higher education

It suits students who want a coaching and sport development route rather than a sport science route.

You will usually need 4 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including English and Maths.

You should also have a strong interest in coaching, leadership, teaching, sport development or community sport.

You will be assessed through coursework and practical assessment. There are no exams on this course.

  • written assignments
  • coaching plans
  • practical coaching delivery
  • presentations
  • session reviews
  • portfolio evidence
  • group projects
  • tutor assessed activities

Your teachers will explain each assessment clearly and support you to understand what evidence you need to produce.

You will complete 5 days of work experience as part of your course.

Work experience helps you build confidence, understand the sport and coaching sector, develop professional behaviours and make stronger choices about your next step.

Suitable placements may include coaching, school sport, clubs, community sport, leisure, fitness, events or activity leadership settings.

After this course, you could progress to:

  • higher education in sports coaching, PE, school sport, sport development, community sport, sport management or related routes
  • apprenticeships in sport, coaching, leisure or activity leadership
  • employment or further training in sport, leisure, coaching or community sport
  • additional coaching or fitness qualifications, where appropriate

With further study, training or experience, this course could support progression towards:

  • assistant sports coach
  • community sport coach
  • school sport support role
  • leisure assistant
  • activity leader
  • sport development support role
  • PE or school sport related degree routes
  • sport management or coaching related higher education

Some roles will require further training, safeguarding checks, coaching qualifications or professional entry requirements.

Sports kit and any trip or enrichment costs to confirm.

You will need appropriate sports kit for practical sessions.

You will also need access to a laptop or suitable device outside college so you can complete independent study, research and assignment work at home.
