Course Overview

This course is for students who are interested in sport, exercise, fitness, health and human performance.

You will study how the body works, how people train, how performance can be tested and improved, and how sport science is used in real coaching, fitness and performance settings.

This is a practical and classroom based course with a strong focus on progression. It is ideal if you are considering university, further training or a career linked to sport and exercise science, sports therapy, fitness, strength and conditioning, performance analysis, health, exercise or PE.

You will study a range of sport, fitness and exercise science topics. You will study a range of practical and classroom based units. Typical units are shown below, but these may change before the course starts to make sure the programme remains current and meets awarding body requirements. Final units will be confirmed during enrolment and induction.

Year 1 units include:

  • Exercise, health and lifestyle
  • Preparing for a career in sport and physical activity
  • Principles of anatomy and physiology
  • The physiology of fitness
  • Fitness testing for sport and exercise
  • Practical team sport
  • Leadership in sport
  • Assessing risk in sport
  • Fitness training and programming

Year 2 units include:

  • Sports nutrition
  • Current issues in sport
  • The athlete’s lifestyle
  • Sports coaching
  • Instructing physical activity and exercise
  • Sports injuries
  • Analysis of sports performance
  • Applied strength and conditioning
  • Sport and exercise massage

You will learn through practical sessions, classroom learning, assignments, fitness testing, training activities, presentations, research tasks and performance analysis.

This course is for students who:

  • enjoy sport, science, fitness and performance
  • want to understand how the body responds to exercise
  • are interested in testing, training, coaching, analysis or injury prevention
  • want a practical alternative to school sixth form
  • are ready for classroom study, practical activity and independent work
  • may be considering university or higher level sport related study

It suits students who want a broad Sport Level 3 route with a stronger science, fitness and performance focus.

You will usually need 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including English and Maths.

Science at Grade 4 or above is recommended due to the sport and exercise science content.

You will be assessed through coursework and practical assessment. There are no exams on this course.

  • research tasks
  • performance analysis
  • portfolio evidence
  • planning and review activities

Your teachers will explain each assessment clearly and support you to understand what evidence you need to produce.

You will complete 5 days of work experience as part of your course.

Work experience helps you build confidence, understand the sport and fitness sector, develop professional behaviours and make stronger choices about your next step.

Suitable placements may include sport, fitness, leisure, coaching, health, wellbeing, community sport or related settings.

After this course, you could progress to:

  • university and higher education in sport and exercise science, sports therapy, sports coaching, strength and conditioning, performance analysis, sport rehabilitation, health and exercise, PE or related routes
  • apprenticeships in sport, fitness, leisure or health related sectors
  • employment or further training in sport, fitness, leisure, coaching or active wellbeing

Students interested in university should check entry requirements carefully, as they vary by provider and course.

With further study, training or experience, this course could support progression towards:

  • fitness instructor
  • personal trainer
  • sports coach
  • strength and conditioning support role
  • performance analysis support role
  • sport and exercise science related roles
  • sports therapy or rehabilitation related progression
  • PE or sport related teaching routes
  • health, fitness and wellbeing roles

You will need appropriate sports kit for practical sessions.

You will also need access to a laptop or suitable device outside college so you can complete independent study, research and assignment work at home.
