Sustainability at the College

Protecting our planet for future generations is everyone's responsibility. At the college, we encourage all students, staff and our communities, to get involved in positive action towards climate change.
Small changes can have a large impact. Through a constant focus on reducing energy consumption, we've achieved a decrease equivalent of over 33 tonnes of CO2, over the last few years. But this is just the start. We will:
- Continue to use the Further Education Climate Action Plan to guide our sustainability work
- Promote sustainability related work and pathways: jobs; apprenticeships; volunteering; and sustainability innovation in the fields of study at the College
- Record and celebrate sustainability achievements made by the College and its communities
- Continue to upgrade our technology to meet sustainability goals
- Ensure new developments, such as at Bournemouth, meet energy efficient requirements, and incorporate biodiversity objectives, for example, creating green space with more native trees planted than those removed to facilitate the construction
- Continue to explore and promote sustainable travel options such as the cycle-to-work scheme and Morebus Commuter Club, to help improve local air quality and health and well-being.

Travel by Bus
Bournemouth is one of 30 cities across the UK to receive a fund from the government to improve their bus service infrastructure. Money allocated to our local council is in the range of £8.8 million. Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole council are working vigilantly to improve the safety and accessibility of our bus shelters, is increasing the frequency of bus services, as well as reaching a significant electric bus fleet, with the support of one our local universities, Bournemouth University.
Beryl Bikes Scheme
Another service available at Bournemouth and Poole College is access to Beryl electric bikes and scooters. Beryl has offered Bournemouth and Poole College £2,000 in free minutes, promoting their services in student engagement events. They are always looking for more ways to promote a cleaner, more affordable and more sustainable way of transport. There are many spots where you can park a Beryl scooter or bike across Bournemouth.

Walking
For those of you who walk, you’ll be happy to know that Parks Foundation, National Trust and Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole council have been working together to create better green spaces, and connecting nature corridors to improve health on a local scale.
The current planned walking paths with wild spaces and more can be found below, highlighting four new trails labelled Stour Valley, Coastal Nature and Heathland. There are proposed greenways that cross across Bournemouth to Poole, with many paths forking to more natural environments.
