Course Overview

This course is for students who enjoy practical sport and want to build the confidence, skills and study habits needed to progress to Level 3.

The course has a clear sports coaching focus. You will take part in sport, develop your own practical skills, learn how coaching works, and begin to plan, deliver and review activity sessions.

It is a good choice if you are interested in coaching, PE, school sport, community sport, leisure or sport development, but are not quite ready to start a Level 3 course.

You will study practical and classroom based topics linked to sport, coaching and activity leadership.

Units include:

  • Participating in Sport
  • Sports Coaching
  • Developing Sporting Skills and Tactical Awareness
  • Plan, Deliver and Evaluate an Activity Session

You will learn how to:

  • take part safely and confidently in sport
  • improve your own practical skills
  • understand basic coaching principles
  • plan simple activity sessions
  • deliver activities to others
  • review your own performance
  • work as part of a team
  • communicate clearly
  • understand tactics, skills and decision making in sport
  • prepare for progression to Level 3

You will also continue English and Maths if you have not yet achieved the required grades.

This course is for students who:

  • enjoy practical sport
  • are interested in coaching, leadership or helping others improve
  • want a supported route into Level 3 Sport
  • need to continue English and maths alongside their course
  • like active, practical and team based learning
  • want to build confidence, routine and study habits
  • are willing to take part fully in practical sessions

It is especially suitable if you want to progress to Sports Coaching Level 3.

You will usually need GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and Maths, or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 course.

You should also have an interest in sport, coaching, practical activity and teamwork.

You will be assessed through coursework and practical assessment. There are no exams on this course.

Assessment may include:

  • written assignments
  • practical activity
  • coaching tasks
  • session plans
  • reviews and evaluations
  • portfolio evidence
  • tutor assessed activities
  • group work

Your teachers will explain each assessment clearly and support you to understand what evidence you need to produce.

You will complete 5 days of work experience as part of your course.

Work experience helps you build confidence, understand the sport and active leisure sector, develop professional behaviours and make stronger choices about your next step.

Suitable experiences may include sport, coaching, leisure, community sport, volunteering, events or activity leadership settings.

The main progression route from this course is:

  • Sports Coaching Level 3 at Bournemouth and Poole College

You may also progress to another suitable Level 3 sport related course, depending on your achievement, attendance, English and Maths progress, and career goals.

With further study, training or experience, this course could support progression towards:

  • sports coaching
  • PE and school sport
  • community sport
  • leisure and recreation
  • activity leadership
  • fitness and wellbeing
  • sports volunteering
  • Level 3 Sport study

This Level 2 course does not qualify you as a full sports coach on its own. It helps you build the foundation skills and confidence needed for Level 3 study and future training.

Sports kit and any trip or enrichment costs to confirm.

You will need appropriate sports kit for practical sessions.

You will also need access to a laptop or suitable device outside college so you can complete independent study, research and assignment work at home.

Course costs, kit requirements and any additional enrichment activity will be confirmed before enrolment.
