This August, 10 student representatives from Bournemouth and Poole College along with Middlesbrough and Chichester Colleges, all travelled to Kenya for a once-in-a-lifetime experience of volunteering, cultural exchange, and adventure.

For many, it was their first trip abroad — and they embraced every moment, from working on community projects to exploring Kenya’s breathtaking landscapes.

Volunteering and Impact

Students supported schools and community centres through hands-on work including building chairs, painting classrooms, and helping with construction. They also spent time connecting with children through play, games, and even cooking a traditional meal of chapatis, rice, and stew. Donations from the colleges provided shoes, school bags, stationery, medical support, and even a bunk bed for a family in need.

Trip Highlights

  • Safari adventure — spotting lions, giraffes, rhinos, and zebras.
  • Sports Day — organising games for 300 children, creating an unforgettable day of laughter and teamwork.
  • Giraffe Centre visit — feeding giraffes in Nairobi.
  • Menengai Crater hike — panoramic views of the Great Rift Valley and local markets.

Memories That Last

The journey pushed students out of their comfort zones, building confidence, empathy, and resilience. As one student reflected: “This trip made me appreciate what I have and showed me how powerful it can be to help others.”

This was a trip that will stay with them forever — shaping not just their studies, but their outlook on life.
