‘Premed’ Anatomy Dissection Experience for Student of Health and Science Students
An award-winning live anatomy experience company came to Bournemouth and Poole College over two days of Thursday 27th – Friday 28th March. Students were able to perform live dissections following a demonstration.
Over 100 students took part in the experience from three study disciplines across the college on the Thursday - Level 3 BTEC Health and Social Care, Access to HE Science and Level 3 Medical Science. The Friday saw T Level students and L3 Science undertake the same activity.
In groups of 4-6, students learned about the cerebellum, spinal cord and brain stem, the digestive system plus key bones in the structure of the body. Holly, Millie, Erin, Jake and Libby from Level 3 Health & Social Care, said the sharp was ‘easy’ to use, and Onyx, 18, from Level 3 Biomedical Science, said: “I’ve done something similar at school, I’m hoping to work in a medical setting so this is a good experience.”
Hilary Gallagher, organising the experience for students, said: “It’s great for students to see real-life scenarios, where they get to practise real experiences, complimenting the theory learnt in class” rather than all classroom-based activity. Inviting the company in to do delivery the anatomy experiences has proven very successful, and we’re hoping to repeat the experience in the future.
