Bournemouth and Poole College held its annual Remembrance Service this week, and the first since the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant in June this year.

This year also marks the 80-year anniversary of the end of World War II.

Representatives, including staff and students, and invited guests, laid wreaths and placed crosses in memory of the courageous men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country, both past and present. We were honoured to welcome Mark Howell, Mayor of Poole, Karen Rampton, Sheriff of Poole, Armed Forces veterans, local Army careers representatives and Fire Service representatives to our Poole Campus for this important occasion. A two-minute silence was observed at 11:00 a.m.

The service was led by Principal and CEO, Phil Sayles, and Steve Burns, Learning Manager for Engineering, who formerly served in the Royal Navy. The Last Post was sounded by bugler Jack Criticos, Music Performance and Production student at the college.

Poppies created by students through BPC Grow sessions and the Students’ Union Hubs were on display, alongside the beautiful poppies made by Mary Dunster. This week, during BPC Grow sessions, students will also be reflecting on the importance of this significant occasion.

Alongside the actual Service, there were several other activities taking place around the college. These included;

Cenotaph Display Boards

Messages of Remembrance were left on the Cenotaph boards found in Reception at Bournemouth and Fulcrum campuses, using poppy cards.

Echoes of Valour – an immersive experience

The college is holding an immersive experience to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who served and continue to serve our country. This interactive exhibition will feature a blend of visual displays, historical storytelling, archive footage and reflective spaces. The experience takes anything between 10-25 minutes.

The Quad display itself will remain in place until Friday, 14th November, providing an opportunity to visit, reflect, and pay your respects in your own time.
