The first meeting of the Student Parliament with the Student Voice model took place last week, aptly in the Boardroom. Twenty-five students united to discuss student social spaces, access and opening times of the canteen, travel to college commutes and information on the new build at Bournemouth.

The Parliament comprises students from all sectors of the college, spanning both Bournemouth and Poole campuses. All were treated to pizza before the lunchtime meeting with the college Principal after the main body of the meeting, discussed how the Student Board Members had attended the Association of Colleges (AoC) which gave highlights to the group and had an open-floor discussion. In closing, they were invited to the Christmas Fair on the ground floor of the Poole campus building.

Phil Sayles, Principal of the College, said in his LinkedIn post afterwards, “With the guidance of our team, all our reps are developing (fast!) the skills and confidence to be able to make key points and persuasive arguments. Their values, ambition, care and humanity shine through.

He added: “It is brilliant to hear. My role, in attending, as I told them, is to 'listen and serve'. I can also give some immediate feedback, but their views and requests then go to our College Exec, and come back to the next parliament with answers and solutions. And their perspective is valuable, and presses us to address issues with renewed focus.”

The date of the next meeting is booked for Wednesday, 25th February – during the Spring Term.
