Course Overview

This course is designed for students who want to build confidence, routine and practical skills while exploring Sport and Uniformed Public Services.

You will develop your understanding of sport, fitness, teamwork, health, personal development and future career planning. You will also build the personal skills needed for your next step, including communication, confidence, organisation, attendance, teamwork and self discipline.

This course is a good starting point if you are not yet ready for Level 2, but you are interested in sport, fitness, coaching, leisure or uniformed public services and want a supported route towards further study.

You will study a range of practical and classroom based units. Typical units are shown below, but these may change before the course starts to make sure the programme remains current and meets awarding body requirements. Final units will be confirmed during enrolment and induction.

  • Teamwork Skills
  • Alcohol Awareness for the Individual
  • How the Body Works
  • Introduction to Drug Awareness for the Individual
  • Participating in Leisure Activities
  • Personal Budgeting and Money Management
  • Planning Own Fitness Programme
  • Take Part in Exercise and Fitness

You will also study English and maths if you have not already achieved the required grades.

This course is for students who:

  • are interested in sport, fitness, active leisure or uniformed public services
  • want a supported first step into college
  • need to build confidence before progressing to Level 2
  • enjoy practical and active learning
  • want to improve teamwork, communication and personal organisation
  • may need to continue English and maths alongside their course
  • want to explore future career options before choosing a clearer pathway

It is especially suitable if you want to build the skills, confidence and habits needed to progress to Sport Level 2 or another suitable Level 2 course.

You will usually need a minimum of 3 GCSEs, including English and Maths, at Grades 1 to 3.

Alternatively, you may be able to progress from a relevant Entry Level 3 qualification with Entry Level 3 Functional Skills in English and Maths

You will be assessed through coursework and practical assessment. There are no exams on this course.

  • portfolio evidence
  • tutor assessed activities
  • group work
  • personal development tasks
  • practical demonstrations

Your teachers will explain each assessment clearly and support you to understand what evidence you need to produce.

You will complete 5 days of work experience as part of your course.

Work experience helps you build confidence, understand the world of work, develop professional behaviours and make stronger choices about your next step.

Suitable experiences may include sport, leisure, community activity, volunteering, events, customer service or public services related settings.

After this course, you could progress to a suitable Level 2 course, depending on your achievement, attendance, attitude and English and Maths progress.

This course is designed as a stepping stone, helping you prepare for more specialist study.

With further study and training, this course could support progression towards sectors such as:

  • coaching and activity leadership
  • leisure centres and recreation
  • uniformed public services
  • community activity and volunteering

This Level 1 course does not lead directly into specialist careers. It helps you build the foundation for further study and progression.

Sports kit and any trip or enrichment costs to be confirmed before enrolment.

You will need appropriate sports kit for practical sessions.

You will also need access to a laptop or suitable device outside college so you can complete independent study, research and assignment work at home.
