This qualification is intended for candidates who are looking to start their training to become a counsellor, or to learn counselling skills to help them in their current job or profession.
It introduces underlying theory which prepares you for the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies. Our Counselling courses are run in conjunction with the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). Applicants must be over the age of 19.
This course runs from 09:30-16:30 on Tuesdays. We have start dates in September and in January. For information on the next course please email the course administrator at neilsonc@bpc.ac.uk.
During this course you will build on your skills while being introduced to a variety of theoretical approaches.
You will focus on:
This course is for those who are looking to start their training to become a counsellor, or to learn counselling skills to help them in their current job or profession.
You must be at least 19 years of age and you will be asked to:
Attend an interview and course briefing with the course tutors where you will be given more information about the course.
CPCAB guidelines are followed and applicants must have a suitable level of literacy, numeracy and IT skills. Bournemouth and Poole College have resources for those who may need additional support with this.
For students who use English as a second language, evidence of IELTS at Level 6 is needed for progression on to the Level 4 Diploma course.
The College take the health, safety and well being of students very seriously. If you have recently experienced a significant life event (e.g. bereavement, divorce, arrest, court proceedings, etc.), are currently suffering or recovering from a serious medical condition, are being treated for mental health problems or if you are in recovery from addiction and are less than two years clean and dry you must discuss this with the tutors before applying for the course. Failure to do so would be a breach of integrity and could prevent successful completion of the course.
You need to be aware that the course involves experiential elements which will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal development activities.
Where applicable, we would advise applicants against joining the same training group as their partner or family member.
Learning reviews
Group and individual presentations
Written assignments and research
Observation of skills
Completion of a portfolio of work showing consistent evidence of regular learning
Upon successful completion of the course, there is an opportunity for you to progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies. However, as with previous levels progression is not automatic and will be dependent on recommendation from your tutor (taking into consideration a number of points including attendance and CPCAB guidelines).
This qualification will enable successful candidates to work as skilled supporters within a range of job and career opportunities, which include but are not limited to:
£656, which includes CPCAB registration fees. This could be waivered down to £110 if you can provide evidence you are in receipt of benefits or on a low income.
We recommend purchasing Counselling Skills and Studies, 3rd Edition, (2024) Ballantyne-Dykes, Posting, Kopp, Crouch, Sage). However, some copies are available to borrow from the Learning Environment.
This course is taught through a mixture of activities; group and individual work, presentations, in-class activities, and written work.
Reasonable adjustments are made for students. If you need additional support, please speak to the tutor.
