Apprenticeships are a popular choice for someone looking for on-the-job training and the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage. Most of your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace, backed up by attendance at college just one day a week.

An Accounts/Finance Assistant is an integral part of the team responsible for maintaining an efficient and accurate finance function within a business. The Accounts/Finance Assistant is responsible for assisting the team of accountants with junior accounting duties. These can vary massively depending on the team structure and size of business. An Accounts/Finance Assistant’s work could include basic bookkeeping activities, working with sales and purchase ledgers, running calculations to ensure that records and payments are correct, recording of cash and data entry. Accounts/Finance Assistants can work in almost any sector. Potential employers include corporate businesses, sole traders, partnerships, Public Sector, not-for-profit organisations and educational institutions. Accounts/Finance Assistants may work in-house for an organisation or they might work for accountancy firm, bookkeeping practice, Shared Service provider, self-employed or on behalf of several different clients.

Which covers key skills including:

• Accounting systems and processes:understanding how accounting systems and processes allow businesses to keep track of all types of financial transactions and the differences between Financial and Management Accounting

• Bookkeeping: understanding basic accountancy concepts and double entry bookkeeping, controls and cost recording systems • Business knowledge: learning elements of commercial law that may have an impact when working in accountancy, such as contracts, data protection and Anti Money Laundering.

• Communication: learning to dealeffectively with stakeholders using appropriate communication methods to deliver accurate and timely results.

5 GCSES at grades 9-4 (A*-C) including Maths and English. Some employers will accept other relevant qualifications and experience, including a relevant Level 2 qualification. Apprentices without English or maths at Level 2 must achieve this prior to taking the Apprenticeship End Point Assessment.

How the apprentice is assessed:Technical knowledge and understanding is assessed on programme through a combination of Ofqual-regulated KnowledgeModules and specified vendor and professional qualifications. These must bepassed before the End Point Assessment cantake place.These include:• Passing exams required as part of theon-programme assessment (such as Level 2 English and maths)• Completion of training logs which demonstrates knowledge, skills and behaviours have been met• Evidence from performance appraisals• Feedback from progress reviews completed by the Training Provider

End Point Assessment:The final End Point Assessment is completed in the last few months of the Apprenticeship. It is based on:

• A structured interview, supportedby a portfolio of evidence, coveringthe knowledge and skills gained throughout the on-programme stage of the Apprenticeship.

• An in-tray assessment based on ascenario in a fictitious organisation, which replicates the typical work an Accounts/Finance Assistant will have to manage in a workplace.

You do not need any work experience to start this apprenticeship course.

Upon completion you can then look at completing the Level 3 AAT Apprenticeship to further you career.

Upon completion you will have the AAT Level 2 qualification to either progress onto Level 3 or go into a Junior level role within Finance such as: Finance Assistant, Finance Administrator, Accounts Admin.
