Careers Team Celebrated at National Awards for Transforming SEND Futures
The Careers and Guidance Team at Bournemouth and Poole College is celebrating national recognition after Trainee Careers Lead (SEND) Alison Catford, was named runner-up for Inspirational Project of the Year at the NAMSS (The National Association for Managers of Student Services) Awards, held in Birmingham.
The accolade highlights the College’s pioneering SEND Careers Programme, an initiative designed to empower students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to achieve their ambitions and build fulfilling, independent lives.
The award recognises innovative projects that have made a significant impact on student experience and outcomes. The College’s submission showcased a strategic, college-wide approach to inclusive careers education, aligning with national frameworks such as the Gatsby Benchmarks and Preparation for Adulthood outcomes.
The SEND Careers Programme provides tailored, accessible support for learners, including those with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), looked-after children and students with additional learning needs. Through personalised guidance, employer engagement, supported internships and hands-on activities such as workshops, students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their futures.
The programme has already delivered measurable impact. Engagement among EHCP learners has increased by 18.4%, while fewer students are declining careers support, reflecting growing trust and confidence in the service. Feedback from students and families has been overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting life-changing improvements in confidence, clarity and aspirations.
Speaking after the ceremony, Alison said: “It was a privilege to represent the Careers Team at the NAMSS Awards and completely overwhelming to finish in the top three. Whilst it is, of course, lovely to receive that recognition as colleagues, most importantly what that recognition means is that the SEND Careers Programme is working and will continue to improve the futures for our most vulnerable young people and that is where my heart lies.”
This national recognition reinforces Bournemouth and Poole College’s commitment to ensuring every student can achieve their best. The success of the SEND Careers Programme demonstrates that inclusive, innovative support not only transforms individual lives but also sets a benchmark for excellence across the sector.
