Nonge, a Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning student at Bournemouth and Poole College, has been named a finalist in the 2026 Northern Council for Further Education (NCFE) Aspiration Awards, which places him in the running for the highly regarded ‘Learner of the Year Award’. His nomination is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and hard work.

Nonge’s journey into education was anything but conventional. After gaining experience in hospitality, construction, and care, he returned to learning with a clear sense of purpose. He quickly established himself as a motivated and reflective student and consistently impressed lecturers with his academic performance, professionalism, and dedication.

Nonge admitted, “I didn’t expect this nomination at all. School wasn’t easy for me. Completing the Level 2 Award Support Work opened new doors.” He then worked full-time as a Teaching Assistant and planned to start Level 3 in September, aiming to become a qualified teacher.

His influence extended beyond the classroom. At St James’ Primary School (Pokesdown), Nonge worked in the Rainbow Room, supporting pupils with complex needs. Diane Bircham, Rainbow Room Lead, praised his contribution: “Nonge brought calm, consistency, and creativity. He was a real asset to the team and an incredible support to the children.”

Nonge’s story exemplified Bournemouth and Poole College’s commitment to nurturing not just academic success, but also confidence, resilience, and personal growth. His nomination shone a national spotlight on the college’s holistic approach to education, where ambition, character, and achievement were celebrated equally.

As Nonge awaited the results of the NCFE Aspiration Awards, his journey continued to inspire both his peers and educators, demonstrating that with determination and passion, challenges could become stepping stones to remarkable success.

Ellie, also from the college, a T Level Education and Early Years student, was nominated for the ‘Against All Odds Award,’ and her journey showed a powerful example of determination and growth. Lecturer Vicky Cameron said, “Ellie faced challenges that would have stopped many learners, yet she excelled academically, professionally, and personally. Her story was one of true transformation.”

Her impact went beyond her own success. She was known for supporting peers with empathy and calm guidance, fostering a sense of community in her classroom. Since finishing her course, she stepped into a role as a Support Assistant in a school, where her dedication and compassion continued to make a difference. Vicky added, “Ellie now has a clear sense of purpose, committed to positively shaping the lives of children.”

At Bournemouth and Poole College, the focus is not just on qualifications—it is on nurturing students as confident, resilient individuals. These dual nominations shone a light on the college’s holistic approach to education, where character, ambition, and achievement were celebrated nationally.

With two students nominated, and one a finalist for the six national awards, the college proudly looks ahead to the winners’ announcement in June 2026, celebrating the ambition and talent of these exceptional learners. The college would like to wish Nonge all the very best on the day.
