Course Overview

The course gives learners a broad introduction to the practices and processes of engineering technology. It covers basic knowledge, understanding and skills that are relevant to a wide variety of careers and study routes and takes a hands-on approach to basic engineering training.

The qualification comprises one core mandatory unit, which provides learners with an introduction to working in the engineering sector, and 3 additional units covering Mechanical and Electrical Engineering topics.

Extension topics include composites and additive manufacturing.

You will need to achieve GCSE grades D-G including English and maths grades 3-1. Alternatively, successful completion of a Foundation Entry Level 3 qualification and have achieved an Entry Level 3 Functional Skill in English and maths.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" />

Assessment includes an externally set and marked examination, internally marked practical and/or theory assessments, and a final cross-unit synoptic assessment.

Learners are encouraged to complete 35 hours of work experience during this course in preparation for work or futher studies.

As a Level 1 course this provides progression opportunities onto any college Level 2 full time course including within Engineering, Automotive and Marine. it also provides progression opportunities onto Level 2 apprenticeships in these areas.

Potential jobs after completing Level 1 and Level 2 courses include Maintenance Technician Assistant, Semi-Skilled Welder/Fabricator, Machine Operator Trainee, Electronics Assembly Technician.

Course cost is £150 which includes PPE (top, trousers and overalls) and educational visits.

You will need to provide suitable safety boots which must be worn at all times in the workshops, you will need to bring pens and an A4 notebook to keep a record of your learning.
