Course Overview
The Level 5 Learning & Skills Apprenticeship delivered at the college is an ‘in-service’ qualification designed for those working as teachers or trainers in the post compulsory sector (16 years plus). It may be possible for pre-service teachers/ trainers to also complete this qualification, provided they meet the entry requirements. Those not yet formally contracted to work as teachers/trainers may be able to undertake this qualification, provided they have access to 150 hours of teaching and a further 100 hours of other duties, to include assessment, meetings etc. including 20 hours, which should in a different teaching organisation (subsidiary placement).
These should all be carried out over the duration of the award.
The whole qualification is delivered part time over 18 months programme followed by a 3-month End-Point Assessment phase
Students who successfully complete this qualification will gain a further knowledge on aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, students will learn about theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice. Students will also carry out research into professionalism in education and training and consider their impact on their role as a fully qualified teacher.
This course covers topics such as behaviour management, Equality and Diversity, curriculum development, theories and principles of learning, plus more besides.
Apprentices are expected to attend a 3 hour taught session a week, during term time, at the College’s Poole Campus. Time and day TBC.
This apprenticeship delivered at the college is an ‘in-service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers or trainers in the post compulsory sector (16 years plus) and be able to provide evidence of at least 250 hours of teaching practice experience over the duration of the course.
It is a requirement that anyone entering this course will have a minimum level 3 qualification in their own area of specialism and a Level 2 in English & Maths (GCSE grade C/4 or above) or equivalent. Plus, access to 150 hours of teaching and a further 100 hours of other duties, to include assessment, meetings etc. including 20 hours, which should in a different teaching organisation (subsidiary placement). These should all be carried out over the duration of the award.
Additionally, you will need two mentors, one specialist subject and one pastoral to support you through the programme (One mentor can be your employer who will need to be available for tripartite meetings every 12 weeks of the programme.)
Prior to enrolment, original certificates are required to be seen and verified along with a copy of the applicants most recent enhanced DBS certificate. Please note all international qualifications which are listed in the application to meet the entry criteria will need to be accompanied by a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability.
To be eligible for an apprenticeship, you must:
- have a contract of employment that spans the length of the apprenticeship
- hold a UK passport, or if you are a non-UK national, have valid passport and Share code to demonstrate residency
- have lived in the UK for the past three years
- have access to public funds (residency status/visa status)
The qualification is assessed through a combination of presentations, written assignments, a portfolio of teaching evidence, and observed teaching practice.
During the final three months of the Learning & Skills Teacher Apprenticeship, apprentices will compile a professional portfolio. Much of the required evidence will have been generated throughout the programme. As a guide, the portfolio should include:
- Evidence demonstrating achievement of the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs)
- Mapped evidence clearly linked to the apprenticeship standard
- A range of distinct evidence items, such as observation records, lesson plans and supporting teaching materials
- Supporting sources, for example workplace policies and procedures, annotated photographs, video recordings and other relevant artefacts
At the end of the programme, apprentices will complete the End-Point Assessment (EPA). This will consist of a teaching observation and a professional discussion.
This course qualifies students to work in a variety of teaching environments including, further education colleges, military training institutions, secondary schools, private training providers and the voluntary/public sectors.
Previous successful candidates are now working as lecturers and managers in the Further Education and Secondary School Sectors, as well as going on to further study, completing BA (Hons) and Masters in Education.
On successful completion students can apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status) which is equivalent to QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) in a school setting.
There is no cost to an apprentice.
If you are an employer employing an apprentice over the age 21 (without an EHCP) then you are likely to pay 5% towards the training cost.
If you are an employer with an Apprenticeship levy (i.e. your payroll exceeds £3 Million) then you will pay in full from your levy account.
