Course Overview
This nationally recognised qualification is designed for individuals working in or aspiring to internal quality assurance (IQA) roles. The award supports professionals in monitoring, supporting, and improving assessment practices within their organisations, ensuring compliance with awarding body standards.
The qualification consists of two units:
- Unit 401: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Internally Assuring the Quality of Assessment – a knowledge-based unit covering the theory behind IQA.
- Unit 402: Internally Assure the Quality of Assessment – a competence-based unit requiring practical demonstration of IQA activities such as planning, monitoring, and evaluating assessment processes.
Learners will engage in:
- Planning and operating internal assessment systems
- Supporting and developing assessors
- Monitoring and improving assessment quality
- Applying policies and legislation
- Building a portfolio of evidence through workplace practice
This award is ideal for professionals who:
- Are currently in an IQA role or have access to one
- Work in accredited or non-accredited learning environments
- Are responsible for ensuring the quality of assessment within their organisation
It suits those in further education, adult learning, employer-based training, and third-sector organisations.
Applicants must:
- Be qualified assessors with at least 12 months of experience
- Have access to an IQA role (via employment or placement)
- Be able to work with at least two assessors, each assessing two learners
- Have occupational competence in the area they are quality assuring
- Be enrolled no later than the end of February.
Assessment is based on:
- Written assignments and oral statements
- Observation of IQA practice
- Portfolio of evidence
- Monitoring and supporting assessors
- Participation in standardisation activities
Evidence must demonstrate the learner’s ability to apply IQA principles in a real-world setting.
By completing the Level 4 Award, individuals gain a strong foundation for roles in quality assurance and can then build on this with further qualifications and experience to progress into more advanced positions within their chosen field.

The programme is delivered entirely online, combining one-to-one tutorials and practical observations. This flexible approach ensures you receive high-quality support and assessment without the need for face-to-face sessions. To meet the course requirements, including mandatory observations, you must be enrolled no later than the end of February.
