Course Overview

Do you have an adaptive and inquisitive mind? This course is suitable for people with a passion for Science, or its role in the Criminal Justice System, or Medical & Health. T

You should be methodical, meticulous with detail and be ready to accept new challenges.

This course is your first step towards working within the field of Science, and one which provides you with the basic skills and knowledge required to further your study at university.

As well as learning new methods of working you will find that your communication skills will improve, as this is an important skill for any Scientist. You will also learn how to assemble and process data while being articulate about your findings.
 

The National Diploma in Science is an 13 unit course, made up of 7 core units and 7 specialist units and is equivalent to 3 A Levels.
The 7 core units include:

  • Principles and Applications of Science I and II
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Scientific Investigation Skills
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application
  • Contemporary Issues in Science
  • Investigative Projects

The specialist units can include:

  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Physiology of Human Regulation & Reproduction

Biomedical Science Pathway Units

  • Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
  • Biomedical Science
  • Disease & Infection

Forensic Science Pathway Units

  • Forensic Evidence Collection and Analysis
  • Material Science
  • Fire Investigation 

 

It is expected that trips and visiting speakers will fulfil most of your direct experience with the science Industry.
 

You will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English, maths and double Science grades 9-4 (formerly A*-C).

Alternatively successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification and have achieved a Level 2 Functional Skill in English and maths.

You will be assessed through practical work, scenario based assessment, assignments and external examinations.

Science based courses at The College are taught in classrooms and specially adapted laboratories. You will also have extensive use of The College's Learning Resource Centres including Moodle (College course resources). 

You will complete work experience during each year on the course.

This will build your skillset and give evidence that you can apply your knowledge in a workplace setting. This will make you standout to employers.

While employment may be found within the field of forensic science direct from college, the recommended progression route would be university to enhance your knowledge and skills.

After completing Analytical and Forensic science here at The College, you will be equiped with skills that are highly valued by employers. You may find opportunities for roles like:

  • Forensic Laboratory Technician
  • Crime Scene Investigator (CSI)
  • Police Officer

And other scientific roles like:

  • Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • Science School Technician
  • Animal Technician
  • Food Technician
  • Pharmacy retail worker
  • Biomedical Scientist
  • Paramedic
  • Operating Department Practitioner

Tuition fees are not payable on full time courses for 16-18 year olds.
