We’ve had a busy few months since the start of the Academic Year at Bournemouth and Poole College with our Stars-of-the-Month taking the top spots. September Star-of-the-Month was Emma Gillings, who is a Curriculum Administrator spending the majority of her time at the Fulcrum.  October Star-of-the-Month was Martin Clark, a Graphic Designer in the Marketing Department at Poole. November had an unusual two Stars-of-the-Month and the awards went to  Chris Simpson and Robert Johnston from the Plumbing Department.

The Christmas and December 2023 Star-of-the-Month saw Sharon Marsh, who works as an Academic Support Assistant (ASA) in the People and Student Experience team win her award for going the extra mile above and beyond her regular duties. Our January winner, was Karen Hanmer, Placement Visiting Assessor (PVA) in the Science, Care, Health & Foundation Directorate, and our February Star-of-the-Month,  Shane Trotter, an electrician from the Estates Department.

Sharon Marsh, the December winner always puts the student first at the heart of her work. From ensuring inclusivity for all students during a trip to the Warner Brothers’ Studio Tour, for The Making of Harry Potter trip, to personally making sure a wheelchair user could tour the whole site (150,000 sq. ft). She also recently assisted a student with a personal health scare and offered pastoral and supportive help. She has been described as selfless, compassionate and with a particular dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all who come under her wings.

Next up, our January winner, Karen Hanmer has supported visually impaired students to complete their controlled assessments as a reader and scribe on a 1:1 basis. Although Karen is not a teacher; she is a considerate member of the team who confidently manages the classes and supports the students to ensure the content is delivered, and their needs are met.  Karen undertook this whilst ensuring nothing was compromised in her workload.

Karen’s intervention meant that students were successfully able to complete their work to the required timescales and pass through to the next stage. Her winning accolade was a certificate, a voucher and an extra day of annual leave.

Finally, and more recently announced was the February Star-of-the-Month,  Shane Trotter, is described as “Having replaced all the bar lights in the Learning Environment at the Poole campus with a smile.” His nominee said he did an ‘Outstanding job’, making a ‘massive difference’ to the look and feel of the Learning Environment. Shane also receives a certificate, voucher and extra day of annual leave for his sterling efforts.

We also had an Easter egg bonanza giveaway for staff nominated on Team Hub, giving just over 100 eggs to dedicated staff. Our next awards will be announced at the end of the year.
