One Hundred Per Cent of Students in Southern Universities Network Gain Their Firm Choice Place!
Bournemouth and Poole College students who worked in tandem with Hollie Craig, our Southern Universities Network (SUN) Progression Mentor, achieved a hundred per cent success rate in gaining their firm choice university places.
This year, we’ve particularly seen a rise in our healthcare provision learners progressing into Higher Education, and on into professional sectors such as Physiotherapy and Psychology.
The SUN’s Uni Connect scheme supports students who live in geographical wards in which progression onto Higher Education is lower than average. Hollie has worked closely with this year’s cohort to tackle education inequity and raise student aspirations.
Three students studying on the progression routes to university included Alicia (going on to study BSc Psychology), Tara (taking a gap year, then on to BSc Paramedic Science) and Jane (going on to study BSc Midwifery at Bournemouth University).
Adam, previously a student on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Biomedical Science, who is moving on to study Physiotherapy at Bournemouth University, said: “I'm feeling great, it’s nice to see the blood, sweat and tears, was worth getting into university for, after working so hard and giving the course my absolute all.”
Another student on the same course, Mamadou, secured a Bioscience Degree Apprenticeship with GSK Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Company. He said: ‘I’m really excited to start my degree apprenticeship and to specialise in something which is so interesting to me. I’m excited to see where this takes me!’
Other curriculum or faculty area graduates such as Tia, have gone further afield to study BA Liberal Arts at the University of Birmingham, and Micky – who gained a Distinction in his Extended Diploma in Digital Animation is going on to study the FdA 2D Digital Animation and Design Production at the next level. He said: It’s a massive level of relief and I’m definitely excited for what’s next. It’s terrifying but in the best way.”
Hollie Craig, on behalf of the college, said: “This milestone is more than a statistic; it represents the journeys of some of the most underrepresented students in higher education, who have worked tirelessly to overcome barriers and seize their opportunities.”
She added: “Mirroring national trends, these students have secured places at some of the most incredible universities across the country, from Russell Group institutions to highly specialised providers.”
