Earlier this year, a group of our students had the incredible opportunity to travel to Lisbon, Portugal, as part of the Turing Scheme, a UK government programme that supports international work and study placements. The trip aimed to broaden students’ horizons - both personally and professionally - by immersing them in a new culture, developing their employability skills, and encouraging independence. Over 13 unforgettable days, students not only explored one of Europe’s most vibrant capital cities but also took part in work experience placements, language lessons, and team-based challenges that pushed them to grow in confidence, resilience, and self-belief.

From the moment they landed in Lisbon, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and embrace every opportunity that came their way. Whether they were navigating the city’s historic streets, speaking Portuguese with locals, or presenting themselves in workplace settings, it was inspiring to see them rise to the occasion with energy and enthusiasm. These experiences weren’t just educational - they were transformational.

A key part of the trip was the Lisbon Cultural Quest, where students participated in a series of fun and interactive team challenges designed to help them connect with the city’s identity. From tasting the country’s famous custard tarts during the Pastel de Nata Perfection challenge, to spotting intricate ceramic tiles in the Azulejo Treasure Hunt, and even filming a creative advert in the Tuk-Tuk Sales Pitch, the group learned to collaborate while discovering Lisbon's cultural gems.

Alongside these light-hearted moments, students were allowed to dive deeper into Lisbon’s rich history and architecture. They visited iconic landmarks such as Rossio Square, Lisbon Cathedral, and the hauntingly beautiful Carmo Convent, which remains roofless after the 1755 earthquake. A trip to the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) offered a modern counterpoint to these historic sites, while a guided walking tour through the Belem district explored Portugal’s seafaring past. A scenic boat cruise gave students a new perspective of the city from the water, and a day trip to Sintra - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - allowed them to explore its magical palaces and forested hills.

Beyond sightseeing, the trip was designed to give students meaningful real-world experience. Each student was placed in a local work experience setting, gaining insight into different industries and practising workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability. This was complemented by Portuguese language lessons, where students got to grips with basic conversation and practical phrases to use during their stay.

To help prepare them for independent living, students were also expected to manage a budget, shop for groceries, and cook their own meals in teams - activities that encouraged both responsibility and cooperation. It was amazing to see how quickly they adapted, supporting one another and building new friendships along the way.

The trip ended on a high note with a few days of well-earned fun and relaxation. A round of mini golf, lively pool games, and shared meals gave students the chance to celebrate everything they had achieved and reflect on the journey they had taken together.

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the staff who worked tirelessly to make this trip a reality. Your dedication ensured that our students were safe, supported, and able to make the most of this extraordinary opportunity.

Most of all, we are immensely proud of our students. Their curiosity, courage, and positive attitude made this trip a resounding success. They return not only with new skills and knowledge but with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
