In early September, representatives from Bournemouth and Poole College had the pleasure of visiting Lovell Stone Group’s quarry near Swanage, gaining a first-hand look at how locally sourced stone is being transformed for the Bournemouth Campus Redevelopment Project and the clocktower.

The visit followed the stone’s remarkable journey — from extraction at the quarry, through precision cutting, to the skilled craftsmanship of stonemasons who carefully shape each piece before it’s prepared for installation on campus.

Walking through the site, you could follow the journey of each stone — from being cut from the ground, to carefully shaped, and finally prepared for delivery. It really highlighted the incredible skill, effort, and pride poured into something that, in the end, we’ll simply look up at and admire as part of a finalised building.

It was a powerful reminder that behind every project are teams of people and processes we don’t always see — yet without them, nothing would stand.

A huge thank you to the team at Lovell Stone Group in Swanage, and to colleagues from Bournemouth and Poole College, Stonewest Ltd, and everyone involved in making this possible.
