College Invites Current School Students to its First ‘Taster Week’
The College organised the first Taster Week of its kind, on the 17th-19th June 2025. Students from the BCP region schools (Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole) and further afield were able to meet with potential future lecturers to try some of the courses in hour-long designated sessions.
The sessions, which covered all subject areas, were delivered to help students feel prepared and well-informed, so that when they are in Year 11 they have the opportunity to apply to the college, with some knowledge of their choice. Research says that many Engineers would not have chosen their career originally, for example, as they did not know it even existed as a career choice.
Two sessions were held on 17th and 18th respectively at the Poole campus and on the 19th, Bournemouth took a turn. Some of the subjects represented included Esports, Health, Hair and Beauty and Construction – among many others.
An example from the Music department's taster session included a hands-on Music Production exercise. In this workshop, students explored the art of Foley dubbing—creating and recording custom sound effects to enhance visual media. They also used industry-standard software Cubase, and got the chance to experiment with recording, editing, and syncing Foley sounds to film, gaining insight into the creative and technical aspects of sound design.
Parents and guardians were given tea and coffee and had the opportunity to talk to Support Staff whilst they waited.
We received very positive feedback from the students who attended, with a large majority indicating that they would apply to that course in the future.
