Course Overview

This course is for you if you want to improve your maths knowledge and feel more confident about using maths in everyday work and life situations.  You will be enrolled onto a level appropriate for you (Entry 3, Level 1 or Level 2) based on your pre-course assessment. Ultimately, all students will work towards achieving a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification, which is seen as the equivalent of a Grade 4 pass at GCSE and is valued by HE institutions and employers.

What will you learn?

This course is based on 'everyday' maths. It will help you at work, at home and with further studies. Amongst other things, you will learn about numbers, measures, statistics, fractions, decimals, percentages, shapes, graphs and problem solving.

You will work towards achieving a national qualification in Functional Skills Maths up to level 2 (Level 2 is generally seen as the equivalent of a GCSE Grade 4 pass).

The course is for anyone who needs to improve their confidence and understanding of a range of maths skills and knowledge and who wants to achieve a nationally-recognised Functional Skills qualification.

All prospective students need to take an assessment before commencing this course. The assessment is in two parts: An online BKSB assessment and then an in-person non-calculator assessment. Based on these two assessments, students will be assigned the most suitable level (Entry 3, Level 1or Level 2) for them.

All students will need to take an externally-based Maths exam. This exam has two parts: A non-calculator paper and a calculator paper. Students will be entered for the exam when their teacher feels they are ready.  Most students will study for approximately 6 months. There will be more than one opportunity to sit the exam, if needed. Attendance at exams is compulsory.
