Course Overview

Within this course learners will be introduced into the world of games development. This course will focus on a range of technical skills including games content such as learning Python, Godot and Unreal Engine. This course also offers broader skills such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects with editing graphics and content for social media.

The UAL Awarding Body Level 2 Award and Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology has been developed in response to an identified need for students studying for qualifications in media to have a broad diagnostic experience that provides them with an understanding of the discipline and prepares them for the reality of the sector and progression paths and careers available to them.

The Level 2 Award and Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology will provide students with an introduction to a broad range of creative and technical skills in media production, enabling them to both re-engage with education and acquire the requisite skills, knowledge and understanding to progress to further education and employment within the industry.

This units have been carefully chosen for this course to ensure that learners are able to explore a range of modules and gain a wide variety of skills. This includes creative software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Blender, Godot and Unreal Engine as well as learning the popular language Python. This will provide the learners with a large range of creative software skills which they can carry forward onto a level 3 course.

As the course is built on a portfolio structure, it means learners will have a large portfolio of work which they can display all of their college work and daily tasks to show their development throughout the year. They can then build on this if they continue with us in the future.

The units will include:

Unit 1 Introduction to creative media methods and skills

Unit 2 Introduction to production techniques in creative media

Unit 3 Understanding an audience in creative media production

Unit 4 Contextual research for creative media production

Unit 5 Exploring audio production and technology

Unit 6 Exploring visual production and technology

Unit 7 Exploring interactive media production and technology

Unit 8 Personal project and presentation in creative media production

Projects for these courses could include:

Making mini games in Python, Godot and Unreal Engine

Researching target audiences in the entertainment industry

Creating and editing video and audio content

Researching and making time-based game scenarios

Making a final game for a final major project

You will require a minimum of 4 GCSEs including English and Maths grade 9-3 (formerly A*-D). Alternatively, successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification and have achieved a Level 1 Functional Skill in English and Maths.

This course combines a range of aspects of media including making games, planning to work in the games industry in a range of various game companies. At the end of this one-year course, if successful the learner will have achieved a Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media Production and technology – UAL Awarding body.

In addition to our BTEC First Cert ICT Level 2, a growing number of our students completing the UAL Award and Diploma course are choosing to progress to more creative options, after progression talks from team members from Creative Industries this has spurred the interest in pursuing L3 programs such as the T levels, BTEC or the L3 in Games design and development, and then ultimately onto the HE courses in CGI and Animation at Bournemouth and Poole College.  Providing the Level 2 UAL Award and Diploma will offer an alternative internal option for all those who want to continue within this subject area.

Clear pathways for progression have been successfully established across of areas of the Creative and Digital Industries. For example, students’ progress from Art and Design to Media and visa versa. This course will expand progression opportunities across the creative economy.
