Course Overview

This qualification is for students who want to develop CBT skills and theory as an integral part of their counselling work and offers 120 hours of guided learning.

On this course you will learn to:

  • Practise and develop CBT skills and theory
  •  Integrate CBT skills and theory into client work
  • To apply and use:-

                                Behavioural experiments

Case formulation / conceptualisation

Socratic dialogue

Behaviour change techniques

Mood and thought monitoring

Mindfulness techniques etc

TC-Level 4 or equivalent prior qualification

Currently working 1-2-1 with clients

You must be at least 19 years of age and you will be asked to provide:-

  • A student profile  
  • Portfolio from Level 4
  • References from counselling agency / organisation, evidence of supervision and personal therapy
  • Evidence of academic ability and experience to work at Level 5    

You will also be required to attend an interview with course tutors

The College take the health, safety and well being of students very seriously.  If you have recently experienced a significant life event (e.g. bereavement, divorce, arrest, court proceedings, etc.), are currently suffering or recovering from a serious medical condition, are being treated for mental health problems or if you are in recovery from addiction and are less than two years clean and dry you must discuss this with the tutors before applying for the course.  Failure to do so would be a breach of integrity and could prevent successful completion of the course.

Where applicable, we do not allow applicants to join the same training group as their partner.

Applicants must have a suitable level of literacy in English and a literacy test may form part of the interview process.

  • 2 Case Studies 3,500 words (1 externally assessed)
  • CBT Research Topic (student choice)
  • Learning review 2000 words
  • Portfolio
  • Essay / behavioural experiment
  • Observation of practice (audio visual recording)
  • Minimum of 30 hours of client work with 3 different clients

Books- All students are required to purchase books to be used in conjunction with the course.  Although the college has copies of all course books in the library and extensive research facilities, the relevant books may not be available when needed.
