Who is eligible?

You may be eligible for free meals if you:

  • Are aged 16–18 or are eligible as a 19+ learner (for example, you have an EHCP or are continuing your programme).
  • Are enrolled on a funded course at the college.
  • Receive, or your parent/carer receives, qualifying benefits. From September 2026, if your household receives Universal Credit, you will qualify for free meals.

What you will receive

  • If your application is approved, you will receive a daily allowance for each day you attend college. This is provided through your student ID card and can be used in college catering outlets.

Do I need to apply?

  • Yes. You must apply for free meals each academic year and provide Universal Credit statements for the most recent three months
  • This includes students who have previously received free school meals or free meals at another college.

Important Information: Free Meals and Bursary Support

Receiving free meals does not automatically mean you will receive a bursary. If you need additional financial support and your total annual household income is below £25,750, you must submit a bursary application instead. Please apply here.

Free College Meals

  • Supports the cost of food while you are at college.
  • Based on benefit eligibility, your household receives Universal Credit.
  • Requires a free meals application.

College Discretionary Bursary

  • May help with other costs such as travel, equipment, or course materials.
  • Has different eligibility criteria – your household receives Universal Credit AND has a total annual household income below £25,750.
  • Requires a separate bursary application.
