College Hosts South West Electrical Skills Competition
THRIVE: Raising Standards, Building Futures: South West Skills Challenge
On Wednesday 11th February 2026, the college proudly hosted the Electrical Installation Skills Competition, delivered as part of the South West Skills Challenge.
Seven Level 2 full-time Electrical Installation learners from colleges across the South west region competed in a practical, time-bound task that required them to install and test a lighting circuit to industry standards. The competition was designed to assess technical accuracy, safe working practices, problem-solving ability and attention to detail, all key attributes required for a successful career in the electrical industry.
We are delighted to announce that our own Level 2 Electrical Installations learner, Josh, achieved first place following an outstanding performance. Josh was awarded a prize bundle worth approximately £200, generously donated by YESS Electrical.
Second place was awarded to Charlie from Exeter College, with third place going to Adam from Weston College. Both learners also received tools to support them as they continue their progression into the electrical industry.
The competition was supported by employer judge Gary Fisher from GF Electrical, whose industry expertise ensured that assessment standards reflected real-world expectations. Employer involvement plays a vital role in strengthening the connection between training and industry practice.
Michael Lock, Director of Learning for Construction, Building Services and the Built Environment, commented:
“Taking part in a South West regional competition is a fantastic opportunity for learners to test their skills against peers and experience real industry standards. We are incredibly proud of all the learners that took part. Events like this demonstrate how we are driving high-quality training to meet regional skills needs and prepare learners for successful careers in the electrical industry.”
