Course Overview

Would you love to become a teacher in the Further Education sector? Are you passionate about learning and helping others to learn?

Then the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is for you.  This is a short, part- time course designed to start your career in teaching, learning and assessment.  There are no entry requirements, other than being functional in English and Maths. However, you will need to be over 18 years of age. As students will be working at Level 3 (A Level) standard, between 3 to 5 hours additional learning a week on top of the classroom hours would be recommended and is dependent on how experienced you are at writing/researching at this level.

The AET Award is a mandatory minimum qualification for all those teaching in the Learning and Skills Sector and replaces the old PTLLS qualification.

The course will cover the following core areas, amongst others:

  • Review appropriate teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area
  • Demonstrate session planning skills
  • Discuss the delivery of inclusive sessions which motivate learners

For those wishing to gain a threshold teaching qualification in the sector or those who would like to try teaching for the first time.

It is preferred that you have a minimum Level 3 qualification in your own area of specialism and hold a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths.

There are no requirements for teaching practice during this course.

The learner will undertake 1 micro-teach which will be graded, plus a number of short written assignments. There is no examination or requirement for a teaching placement on this course.

At the end of the course, you will have a teaching award which is called a ‘threshold licence to teach.’ After this you may be able to progress on to the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE & Skills).
