Every year there are a number of students who decide to make the transition from school life to College life. Some come to study their A Levels in a new environment, whilst others join us for our specialised courses which will help them pursue their dream careers. Recently we caught up with two students, Michelle and Georga, who have made the transition from Bournemouth School for Girls to our College.
Michelle is a second year A Level student studying Biology, Psychology and Sociology at the College. As she came towards the end of Year 11, she realised now was the perfect opportunity for a change.
“I had heard from several friends who had come to the College that the learning environment was very different and that there are a lot of chances for independent study. It turned out to be a fantastic decision!”
Since joining Michelle has enjoyed the challenge of A Levels and is finding Psychology, a subject she had never previously studied, particularly interesting.
“My tutors have been amazing, they have such a passion for the subject and there so many aspects to it. I have loved learning about all the different approaches to the human mind. We have covered everything including humanistic and biological perspectives.”
Michelle, who is hoping to study Psychology or Criminology at University next year, also noted that the she has really valued the student support structure at the College.
“The support services are amazing, help is always there when needed. My form tutor has also really helped with my UCAS application and my personal statement.”
Georga, in the second year of a Level 3 BTEC course in Computing, felt similarly about the support she had received.
“My tutors have really helped me and everyone on the course is achieving their potential. There is a great level of interaction and I’m never scared to ask questions.”
Georga also explained that her tutor had put her forward to talk in the College’s annual 'Women in STEM' event and had nominated her for the prestigious 2019 Rock Star Technology awards. This was for her work with the youth market research group Digipigz, as well as her overall progress at the College.
As a result Georga is very glad she made the decision to come to the College and can see herself staying to study more qualifications in the future.
“I always thought studying for a BTEC qualification instead of A Levels would be a great way to follow my dream of a career in the industry and with the contacts I’ve made because of the course, I have been able achieve so much already.”
“Next year I want to begin an Apprenticeship in Software Development with the College to get even more direct exposure to industry life. I really feel this will be a great platform for the future.”
