The College has welcomed year 10 students from The Grange and Twynham schools for a day learning about electronics within engineering. Pupils were given a tour of the College’s impressive Engineering facilities, met current students and apprentices, and experienced what Engineering at the College is all about.
As part of the day, students also took part in a variety of Christmas themed electronics exercises. This included a session entitled ‘I wish I could be soldering every day’, which involved creating an electronic Christmas tree by soldering LED lights and resistors to a printed circuit board (PCB). In the ‘Coding around the Christmas tree’ session, students also learned how to programme a code to interact with the PCB and control the way in which the Christmas trees lit up.
Students were also able to experience the latest technology in soldering with the assistance of Metcal. Metcal soldiering machines, which have been developed to relay data to the users, are available to Engineering students at the college.
Shane Munford, Learning Manager for Engineering commented on how well the event had been received and how impressed he was with the calibre of the students who attended.
Shane said: “The College would like to thank Rob Palmer, Deputy Head of The Grange and Twynham Schools, for helping to organise this event. It was clear to see that there was a great deal of potential amongst the students, and we hope to see them again in a few years.”
