Ex-carpenter and former Bournemouth & Poole College student Tom Stone is celebrating a £3,000 bursary from the Royal Television Society.

After leaving Bournemouth Grammar school Tom opted for a career in carpentry, but after seven years working in the industry he changed his focus to TV camera skills.

He then enrolled on an Access to Media Studies course at The Bournemouth & Poole College, where he gained a distinction. He’s now studying for a BA (Hons) undergraduate course in TV production at Bournemouth University.

It’s been an amazing few weeks for Michaella Mason, Bournemouth. First she qualified as a full-time carpenter after four years intensive training and now she’s heard she’s the winner of a top award from her peers in the world of carpentry – The Institute of Carpenters.

Two Bournemouth & Poole College apprentices have won a national contest recognising the best of young British talent in the Marine Electrical sector.

George Woolliss and Alex Spencer, who work at Sunseeker International, Poole, were set a complex challenge to build a two-way electrical lighting circuit to operate two lights, but using three switches. The third switch was wired to operate only one of the lights. First they had to design the circuit then build a practical version of it, all to a tight deadline.

Former college Engineering Apprentice Victor Cornhill has his career plans nicely wrapped-up. He is carving out a fine career with Marden Edwards, the Ferndown-based family company with a world-wide reputation for the manufacture of complex and sophisticated shrink-wrap machines.

It’s one of the first of its kind offered by a UK FE College and there’s been a remarkably high level of applicants for the course.

Around 20 young people are studying at the Lansdowne campus in Bournemouth, and most have signed up for apprenticeships with local companies.

They will be learning about marketing using social media to promote their companies to an online audience.
