Former College student shines at university awards

Former Bournemouth & Poole College student, Justin Baker, has triumphed after securing two academic awards at Bournemouth University’s recent graduation ceremony.

The Bournemouth University Rosemary Pope Award was awarded to Justin for most outstanding student from a partner college of the University. Justin was also awarded a Chartered Institute of Marketing Award. The awards recognise his achievements and overall contribution whilst studying for a BA in Marketing Communications. Justin graduated with First Class Honours with the highest grade in his year group.

Speaking of his awards, Justin said: “They came as a great surprise and an honour, I am delighted to be able to round off my time at University in this way.”

With an interest in relationship marketing, Justin decided to focus on Volkswagen (VW) and how they use their relationship marketing. Since graduating, Justin has begun working for the VW group as part of their graduate development scheme and is confident that upon completion, he will be well placed for a management position.

Justin attributes his achievements to his time at the college, where he studied for a Foundation Degree which he claims provided him with a “great platform” for success.
He goes on to say: “my interest in relationship marketing was ignited by the very engaging team of lecturers who combined charisma, knowledge, energy and passion to deliver an excellent learning experience.

“The small class groups meant the teaching felt more personal and I always felt I was able to get support whenever I needed it.”

Justin’s former tutor at the college, Bradley Lansdale, said: “Justin was always a very talented student and I’m delighted he has been able to secure these awards. We are also especially pleased that another former college student has been able to win the Rosemary Pope Award, continuing a long line of success for our graduating students.”

Rosemary Pope was a Professor of Education at Bournemouth University. She had a professional background in nursing and became a key member of the strategic team at Bournemouth University leading the academic development of education at the university, which meant investing in new academic areas, as well as extensive staff restructuring. She died in 2008 and the award is in memory of the valuable contribution she made to Bournemouth University.
