What courses can I do after this? 

This course carries UCAS points.   The skills and knowledge acquired through studying this programme provide a sound basis if you wish to progress to a degree in Law, Business Studies, Criminology and Psychology.  It is also a useful qualification if you will be looking for employment as a legal executive, legal secretary, police officer, journalist, social worker, criminal justice system, civil servant, insurance broker or customer services, Occupational Health, Child Psychology, Sport Psychology and many others.

What do I need to apply

To do this course you should have... 

You will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4 (formerly A*-C) including English and maths. Alternatively successful completion of a Level 2 vocational qualification and achieved a Level 2 Functional Skill in English and math.

What about work experience? 

You will complete 2 weeks work experience whilst on this course.

Course content

Course Content 

The content of the Applied Psychology has been developed to include an exciting range of units that explore the vast world of psychology.  Students will develop knowledge and understanding of key approaches and theories in psychology and apply these to issues relevant to contemporary society, for example lifestyle choices and unhealthy behaviours such as addiction.  Students will learn about the types and characteristics of mental disorders, approaches to treatment, and the role of professionals in supporting and promoting mental health. In addition to exploring the scientific process in psychological research methodology through conducting your own psychological research project.

The content of the Criminology element of the study programme is for students who are interested in why people commit crime, different types of crimes and our perception of different crimes.  Students will learn about the workings of our criminal justice system, bringing the accused to court, criminal theories and social control. 

The content of the Applied Law element has been developed alongside legal professionals.  Students will gain a strong understanding of key terminology related to the legal profession.  The programme content areas include dispute solving in civil law, aspects of Tort, applying the law, investigating aspects of criminal law and the legal system.  Applied Law includes the opportunity for students to develop the research, communication and critical-thinking skills valued by higher education.

More about the course 

The course is taught by well-qualified and experienced staff.  Students will learn through a variety of methods including presentations, scenario based role play, project work and reports. Guest speakers from different backgrounds, visits to the courts, will enrich the learning experience and add a practical aspect to the course.  Students will develop communication skills in a range of theoretical and practical settings.  There will be regular emphasis on problem solving as well as challenging students to develop resilience and independence. Guest speakers from different backgrounds will support teaching delivery.  The programme covers a wide range of topics and can lead to exciting and rewarding careers in a variety of areas.
