This course is designed for people considering a career in the care sector.  You need to show you are hardworking, be willing to learn, have good communication skills, and be able to work as part of a team.  You also need to make sure you have a genuine interest in working in the care sector, and show patience and understanding.

What courses can I do after this? 

On successful completion of this course you could progress onto other level 2 courses including the Level 2 Health and Social Care qualification, you could also progress onto a Level 2 HSC apprenticeship as long as a minimum of a Level 1 F/S's in Eng and Maths or a '3' at GCSE has also been achieved.

What jobs can I get? 

This qualification does not qualify learners to work directly with adults, children or young people, but provides a starting point for deciding whether a career in the sector is right for them.  Eventually, once you have also completed a level 2 qualification in either children or HSC then you may well be able to gain employment as an assistant practitioner in the caring sector.

What do I need to apply

To do this course you should have... 

You will need to achieve GCSEs grades 3 - 1 including English and Maths. Alternatively successful completion of a Foundation Entry Level 3 qualification and have achieved a Level 1 in Functional Skills English and Maths.

What about work experience? 

Students are requried to go on a ‘placement’ in the care  industry as part of their study programme thoughout the academic year, they will be required to wear a college placement T shirt, black trousers and appropriate footwear whilst on placement.  Please note that only those with a satisfactory DBS check will be able to attend a placement.

Course Content 

In class you will be working on topics including looking at the range of services and roles within the health and social care sector, communication, safeguarding, health and safety, healthy eating, job opportunities in health and social care, and many more.
You will be required to also study for your L1 or 2 F/S’s in English and Maths or your GCSE in English and/or Maths alongside your care course, in order to give you the best chance to progress to the level 2 if appropriate.
You will be taught in class by subject specialists and there will also be speaker’s from outside agencies who will be invited into the class to discuss various aspects of Health and Social Care in order to enhance your knowledge so that you will be able to complete your assignments to the best of your ability.

More about the course 

Gaining some experience prior to the start of the course is also very useful.  Voluntary work at a local pre-school, residential home or day centre can provide an invaluable first step into industry and offer good preparation for the course.
