Kiera, Retail Apprenticeship

Kiera, Retail Assistant at Fab Frocks

“I’ve got qualifications to take me through life.”

I didn’t like the way you had to sit down in a classroom at school, so I decided an Apprenticeship in Retail would probably be best for me. I’d be working and get to go to college as well.

Someone from The College helped me to choose my Apprenticeship employer. They came up with a list of jobs, and I chose which ones I wanted to apply for.

Fab Frocks LogoThere was loads to learn about serving customers, processing mail orders, doing window displays and stock. I wasn’t really a ‘people person’ at school but this job has helped to make me more outgoing.

Kiera, Retail Assistant at Fab FrocksMy favourite part of the job is seeing people really happy. We do a lot of mother-of-the-bride, and when somebody finds their perfect outfit they are so happy and really thank you for it. That’s the reward. You’re improving their lives. I know it’s just an outfit, but it’s for a special event that they’re going to remember for the rest of their lives.

To be a good apprentice, I think you need to have a good mind-set and really want to learn. If you don’t want to learn, you won’t get anywhere.

I would recommend an Apprenticeship. I didn’t like school, so it was an easy choice for me. I spent two years in College, and I still got paid and was trained on the job too. Now I’ve got a full-time job and qualifications to take me through life.

I’ve just started with Dorset Young Chamber as an Apprenticeship Ambassador, so I’ll be blogging about my apprenticeship journey. I’m excited to see where that goes.

At some point, I’d love to run my own business or become a manager of a big store.
