Jordan, Marine Electrical Apprenticeship

Marine Technology Centre at Bournemouth & Poole College

Jordan Warren, Sunseeker

I was part of the team that won the British Marine Electrical and Electronics Association Apprentice Award!

I was a little unsure what I wanted to do after my GCSEs, I’d been interested in Engineering and I did really like the idea of an Apprenticeship rather than going to university or sixth form. My uncle worked for Sunseeker 20 years ago and enjoyed it and the course had been recommended by some friends, so I decided to give it a go. I’m really happy with my decision so far, I love it!

I have been working with electrical cable and I get to work on the building of the new boats through each stage of their construction. As well as the skills and knowledge I have learned on my course, I have also developed team working skills too. But that’s not all, as I have also had to learn life skills such as managing money, as one of the best perks of being an Apprentice is that I get paid for my work.

I really like working and practical learning, but at the same time coming to College and meeting other apprentices who work with different employers. It really helps to bring different perspectives to what we are learning. Especially as Sunseeker build luxury yachts, whilst many other apprentices work predominantly on commercial boats. There is also so much to learn from my tutors, who have a huge amount of experience and always seem to know the answers to any questions I have!
