“When I finish my Apprenticeship I want to work on cruise ships touring the world!”
I'm quite a practical person and when I finished school I wanted to explore my creativity. Hairdressing was the perfect way to do this. I get to work with lots of different people and every day brings something new, so I am never bored.
I started off as a junior on a Saturday which gave me an insight into what hairdressing was all about. That’s when I started to explore Apprenticeships to pursue a career in hairdressing.
The company I was at initially, introduced me to the industry and taught me what the working life was all about. However I felt I had reached my highest point of progression so I decided to move to my current salon which offers me different learning experiences.
The college, especially my co-ordinator and tutor have been very supportive. I made it clear from the beginning that I was eager to complete my qualification in good time so I could move on to gain a legitimate career in this field. The Hair Apprenticeship Team helped me enormously in this process.
I really love my job. I enjoy meeting new people and building relationships with regular clients. I’ve had to learn how to think quickly and also deal with different situations. Hairdressing gives me the opportunity to gain and use valuable skills which I’ll have for the rest of my life.
To be a good apprentice you need to be hardworking and have good attention to detail in order to strive for perfection in your work. You need to have good time keeping as the working world is very different to the school environment. You must be reliable too so that your colleagues and employer know they can trust you.
I'm just about to finish my Standard Hairdressing Apprenticeship and will start the Advanced in the New Year. When I finish, I want to work on cruise ships touring the world!
The thing I’d recommend to anyone thinking about Apprenticeships is to take it seriously and make the most of the opportunity you’re given. This will guarantee you’ll go far.
