Alex, age 27, Engineering Apprenticeship, Fred Pope Engineering
"The Apprenticeship has opened my eyes to the world of engineering!"
There is huge demand for engineers and I’ve always been a very hands-on person, so engineering seemed like the perfect route to follow.
I initially started at Fred Pope as cover for another person, however I really took a shine to the role and my manager suggested that an Apprenticeship could be ideal for me. When I was offered a place, I happily accepted it. The College set everything up and here I am.
I really enjoy what I’m doing. I get to meet new people who are passionate about engineering, I get to build things and just generally get in there and do interesting things.
My tasks vary day to day. I set and run CNC machines, I get involved in assembly work, general engineering, modifications and repairs.
The Apprenticeship has gradually eased me into this world of engineering as opposed to be being dropped in at the deep end. I’ve gone from having no experience, to having the skills to become an excellent engineer.
To be a successful apprentice you need to be punctual, need to want to work and have a passion for what you’re doing. Sometime it can be challenging and there’s a lot of work involved. Don’t give up, persevere and you’ll be fine.
When I finish the Apprenticeship I want to go on to do more learning, especially around programming CNC machines. I have ambitions and want to move up the career ladder.
I’d recommend to anyone considering an apprenticeship to go for it. They really are a great thing, especially engineering. Engineers are the unsung heroes. Most items around you wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for engineering.
Alex’s passion for engineering was recognised at a presentation at The College where he was awarded the Engineering Achievement Cup.
