Travel and Tourism

Sam Burges, Adult Travel and Tourism student at Bouremouth & Poole College“For the last 28 years I have predominately worked in the care sector, but my main passion has always been travel. So in September I took a leap of faith and enrolled onto a Travel and Tourism course at the college.

I’ve always had a passion for studying. I did a degree in community development and went on to do lots of courses in care over the years. I did enjoy care work, but I wanted to try different things and go to different places.

I’ve really enjoyed the course. I’m the oldest by far, but I’m doing it for me and I’m determined to pass. I want to get the highest grade possible and achieve a distinction. Plus it really helps that the tutors are all absolutely fantastic, very supportive and easy to get on with.

“I think anyone considering a career change should go for it. There’s a lot of support out there.”

As part of the course I got to do a work placement at Holidaze travel agents in Kinson. I enjoyed this part the most as I’m a practical learner. I learnt a lot and after the placement I was thrilled to be offered a job! It’s a lovely feeling going from one career to a completely different one.

Before I did the course I was applying for travel agent positions, but they wanted to employ someone with experience. It’s that catch 22 situation, you can't get the experience if you’re not given the chance, so this course has definitely helped.
