Why impressionist Vincent Van Gogh was given a digital makeover

Patrick McAndrew digital Van Gogh self portrait

Award-winning Digital Design student Patrick McAndrew is justly proud of his re-working of a famous self-portrait of Vincent Van Gough.

It has all the bright colours and expansive swirling background and weather beaten look of the troubled artist - but it isn’t quite what it seems.

The work of the master impressionist has been “morphed” digitally into a self-portrait of Patrick complete with the Van Gogh beard.

The image called “Patrick Van Gogh” is a clever piece of computer-aided digital art created as part of his third year project on The Bournemouth & Poole College’s Computer Generated Imagery course.

Patrick’s been experimenting with the great master’s work “Le Moulin de la Galette” turning the famous windmill piece into a 3D version and with some success. He was awarded the top prize at this year’s exhibition of the students’ work which is held in the CGI department.

Said Patrick: “I knew I wanted to create a painting in 3D from the beginning. Initially it was going to be a Renaissance style, but I stumbled upon Van Gogh’s painting “Le Moulin de la Galette”. It just jumped out at me, making me want to explore and experiment with the work of the famous impressionist. The portrait was my own little fun tribute to him.

“I know I’m not the first to experiment with the work of famous artists looking for 3D effects but perhaps I’m the first to interpret Van Gogh in this way.”

Scottish-born Patrick has been at the College almost three years. He said: “I love it here. The staff are brilliant and allow us all to use our imaginations to the full. The facilities and equipment are also excellent.”
