Two Bournemouth & Poole College apprentices have won a national contest recognising the best of young British talent in the Marine Electrical sector.
George Woolliss and Alex Spencer, who work at Sunseeker International, Poole, were set a complex challenge to build a two-way electrical lighting circuit to operate two lights, but using three switches. The third switch was wired to operate only one of the lights. First they had to design the circuit then build a practical version of it, all to a tight deadline.
“The lads set about it with enthusiasm and determination,” said proud tutor Richard Boden-Cowell, who is based at the college’s Marine Technology Centre in North Road, Poole, “They worked hard as a team and the judges were suitably impressed.”
The competition is organised by the British Marine Electrical and Electronics Association (BMEEA) which is part of the British Marine Federation (BMF). The BMF works on behalf of its members to promote the vital contribution to the UK economy of the marine industry, which has a high profile in the Poole area.
George and Alex triumphed over stiff competition from rival teams from Marley Marine, Griffin Hovercraft and Oyster Yachts to win the BMEEA Apprentice Electrical Challenge Award.
Their success is a reflection of the hard work put in by the Marine tutors at the college who have more than a century of experience in the boat construction and marine engineering industries. As experts in their field, they are able to teach many aspects of Marine Technology with a focus on engineering, craftsmanship, electronics and design work.
