Alice collecting her award

Bournemouth & Poole College student Alice Kingham, 21, has won the coveted Southern Institute of Hospitality Front of House Student of the Year Award (sponsored by the AA). She is currently studying a BTEC National Diploma in Hospitality Supervision & Events.

The Institute of Hospitality sent their media to film Alice demonstrating her skills of cocktail shaking and flambé work, followed by an interview.  A short list of 80 competitors were narrowed down to just 4 finalists.

Her achievement means that a Bournemouth & Poole college student has won this award 3 years in a row. This reflects the commitment of the staff at the college’s on-site restaurant ‘The Escoffier’. Hospitality tutors Josephine Pearce and Mark Alderman are proud that their mentoring has had a positive impact on the students and resulted in such esteemed recognition.

Alice collected her award at a special ceremony at The Lainston House Hotel in Winchester, her proud parents also attended. As ‘Student of the Year’ she won an engraved decanter, a magnum of Nyetimber and membership to The Institute of Hospitality. This glamorous event was also attended by Steven Edwards, MasterChef The Professionals 2013 Winner and Chef Director at 'Etch'.

Alice completed a 3 month work placement  at The Manoir Quat Saison with Raymond Blanc and is now working at Vervaine at Milford on Sea, her employers were at the event to support her.

Christophe Baffos Head of Curriculum commented: “This award is a great testament to Alice’s professionalism and dedication to her studies, and to the quality of teaching and learning provided to our students by the Hospitality and Catering department’s team at Bournemouth & Poole College.”
