The Semple pleasure in opening North Light Art and Design Centre
"One of the greatest honours of my career." That's how Stuart Semple, Bournemouth-born international artist described the invitation for him to open the new £1m Art and Design centre at the College on the 7th February.
Stuart who has made a name in art circles, which include Lady Gaga, punk band Blondie's lead singer Debbie Harry, Lord Melvyn Bragg and Stephen Fry found himself back at his old college as a VIP.
Head of art Nick Day, who has followed Stuart's career, welcomed the former pupil and asked him to cut the tape on the new North Light Centre for Art and Design in North Road.
He was suitably impressed by the new facilities. "This is really amazing. To come back to more or less where it all began for me and see what today's art students are up to and what kind of studios they can operate in.’’
“So much has changed. The old building where I studied was quite run down. In winter we often had to work in our overcoats as we worked, but the new building is comfortable and I understand created to allow the best use of light.’’
“It brings back great memories, of some of the wonderful staff I worked with - John Bowen and Abbie Cramer who taught art history to name but two.’’
Nick Day said: "This is a proud day for all those involved in bringing this new centre into being. It's a great new resource for the young generation of artists we are hoping to tempt through its doors."
