Routes into Higher Education
There are a number of ways to enter a higher education course. The route you choose depends on your existing qualifications and work experience. Access Courses
Access courses are 1 year full-time and two years part-time and are validated and nationally approved. They are offered to mature students who have had a break from studies and are looking for a return to Education. They are available in a range of subjects and include IT and study skills. Access courses normally act as entry onto the first year of an Honours degree or HND/Foundation degree programme. The year's study should bring the student up to Level/Year 1 entry and applications are made through UCAS in the normal manner to whichever Universities are appropriate .
Foundation Diplomas
This is a 1 year full-time or 2 year part-time intensive course designed to prepare students for HE study in Art, Design or Media. In addition to this, one GCE A-level plus three other subjects at GCSE will be needed.
BTEC/EDEXCEL, SCOTVEC National Certificate or Diploma
You should achieve an overall pass in a subject relevant to your chosen University Course .
Irish Leaving Certificate
6 passes, including 4 at the higher level with grade C or above, normally at 1 sitting.
International or European Baccalaureate
Internationally recognised entry to Higher Education.
National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)
NVQs at Level 3 will be considered in conjunction with other information that helps to demonstrate your ability to benefit from the course and successfully complete it.
Scottish Certificate of Education
4 passes at the Higher grade, or 5 passes including 3 at the Higher grade; or 2 passes (grade C or above) in Certificate of Sixth Year Studies, together with 3 passes at SCE Ordinary level.
Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate
Applicants will be expected to achieve the unit levels already stated in the options component of the awards e.g. GCE, VCE or BTEC Nationals. Overall a student's tariff offer will also recognise their achievements in the core.
