FdA Public Services

Higher Education at The College is actively promoting Foundation Degrees to Industry. As these are vocational courses it is important for us to work in partnership with interested employers who can offer short-term student placements, sit on our advisory panels, or guest speak at a lecture. This continually serves to update the quality of the courses we can bring to our students and help to produce graduates with skills recognised and needed by industry.

Skills for the Professional Workplace
The FdA in Public Services has been developed for students considering a career in the Police Force, Probation Service, the Fire Brigade, the Ambulance Service, the Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, Maritime & Coastal Agency, HM Revenue & Customs, local authorities and voluntary organisations.
- The course provides students with a sound understanding of the work of the Public Services and the environments within which they operate.
- There is an emphasis on developing students' personal and social skills so that they are attractive candidates, offering greater maturity and educational qualifications.
- The course combines practice and theory , and is assessed by a range of methods, which must demonstrate how learning has been applied in the workplace.
- We aim to enhance students' knowledge by having specialist speakers, as well as visits to a variety of Public Service organisations. Outdoor residential elements aim to further the development of personal, practical and leadership skills.

Work Placement
What makes a Foundation Degree distinctive to an employer is the vocational element of the course. Most students are required to undertake a period of work placement within a relevant business to inform their classroom tuition with real industry experience. This also allows employers to feed into our curriculum the skills they feel future employees of their Industry should have. If you feel your company could offer a worthwhile 6 week placement, relevant to a Public Services student, please let us know.
