Introduction:

This two year Foundation degree in Public Services, offered at The Bournemouth and Poole College, is ideal for students who are considering a career in the Police Service, Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service, Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, Maritime & Coastal Agency, HM Revenue & Customs, local authorities and voluntary organisations.

This Foundation degree will provide students with a sound understanding of the work of the public services and the environment within which they operate. There is an emphasis on developing students' personal and social skills so that they are attractive candidates for potential employers.

The course is assessed by a range of assessment methods, including submission of a work-based assignment demonstrating how learning has been applied in the work place. The course will combine practice and theory drawing upon the experiences of students. It is enhanced by the use of visiting specialist speakers and visits to a variety of public service organisations. Outdoor residentials will develop personal, practical and leadership skills.

This is a vocational course designed to be relevant to today's public service employers who are increasingly seeking employees with greater maturity and educational qualifications.

Entry Requirements:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade C minimum to include Maths and English, or "Application of Number' and "Communication" Key Skills Level 2
  • At least ONE A level OR
  • BTEC National Diploma/Certificate/Award in Public Services OR
  • An Access to HE Diploma OR an equivalent qualification / prior work experience

'Indicative Tariff points 120 from two full A Levels or equivalent) Preferred subjects: All subjects considered.

Mature entry is actively encouraged; work experience may also be taken into account.

    • Course Progression:

      Students can choose to apply to the public services directly after successful completion of the course. The units studied and skills acquired can be applied outside the public services opening up career opportunities in a wide range of general business environments.

      Students who successfully complete the Foundation degree will have guaranteed progression to Plymouth University for a third year where they can complete an Honours degree in Public Services. Students who achieve sufficient credits in Year One of the Foundation degree, who decide not to continue to Year Two, will be awarded a Certificate in Higher Education.
